Morgan Freeman is one of my favorite
actors...which is one of the reasons I'm doing this tribute
to him. I live near his home, and my son and I have also
met him on separate occasions.
He was born in Memphis, TN., in June of 1937, and raised
in Charleston, MS.-about 20 miles from my home town of
Tutwiler. He and his wife, Myrna Colley-Lee, attended a
function in Clarksdale, where some of my art-work was being
sold. I had the pleasure of meeting him and his wife there!
They were both very gracious and kind...his wife even
bought some of my cypress-knee pieces! It was very
thrilling! I have a picture that was taken that evening,
and will put it here when I find it! As usual, I can't
remember where I put it!
Freeman did not always want to be an actor.
Growing up, his plans were to have a career in the
military. In fact, he served four years in the Air Force,
before deciding it wasn't for him.
After the military, he studied acting in L.A. In
the early '70's, he did a stint as Easy Reader on PBS' "The
Electric Company". He also directed a film about Aparthied,
Bopha!, in 1993.
These are some of my favorite Morgan Freeman
films. The Power of One is set in South Africa during
Aparthied. It is about the difference one person can make.
It is not a particularly well-known film, but if you get
the chance, you really should see it! I also love Seven,
The Shawshank Redemption, and Glory.
I am putting links here to many sites about
Morgan Freeman or his films. I hope you enjoy
